When it comes to traveling, packing can be a bit of a hassle. Especially when, you really don’t know how to pack, or what to pack. There comes a time in every mans life when just throwing your stuff in a plastic bag is unacceptable. It’s just as unacceptable as using a book bag for all your travel needs. Your luggage makes a statement just like the clothes you wear. You want your luggage to say
“I’m a mature responsible man” not “I’m still at home on my parents couch.” Buying luggage can be a challenge simply because you may not know what you need.
There are a few pieces of luggage that I feel every man should own. These pieces will allow you to travel effectively and look good while doing it. Before I go into the list I want to give a few suggestions in regards to purchasing your pieces. Buy pieces with a purpose, understand the functionality of a piece before making your purchase. Keep in mind that a carry on for a flight can not be more than 24 inches long x 17 inches wide. Checked in luggage can’t weigh more than fifty pounds before being charged a fee. It also needs to be under 62 linear inches. Meaning the length +width +height can not exceed 62. Another thing to keep in mind Is not to buy luggage that is too heavy because that eats up some of your fifty pound weight limit. Also remember to buy practically, designer luggage is nice and it makes you look cool. However that doesn’t mean it’s more sturdy, reliable, or efficient than a quality department store brand. Make your choice based on performance first, and looks second. With that being said here are the pieces I feel every man needs:
Large suit case. The last thing you want to be is unprepared for a family vacation. A large suit case is necessary for trips that last 5-7 days. A large suitcase should be able to hold all your toiletry items, clothes, and shoes for a week. It should have several compartments to accommodate while you’re away from home.
Carry on suit case. A carry on is ideal for a 3-4 day trip. When taking a short trip you don’t want to waste time checking in your bag nor do want to take the risk of your checked in bag getting lost. A carry on can hold a few out fits, 2-3 pairs of shoes, and even a suit. If you plan on taking a mini vacay the carry on is a must. Rather it’s business, or leisure a good carry on will have all the small compartments you need to make your trip a breeze.
Duffle bag (aka a weekender) Duffle bags are versatile, and they make your belongings easily accessible. It typically only has one large compartment. You can pack a lot in a duffle with out being concerned with how neat you’re packing. This bag would be what you’d grab when you’re in a hurry, and just need to throw some clothes together and go! They are great bags for casual travel. (ie road trip, weekend trip, or camping trip.)
Over night bag. Another bag for easy accessibility and a short stay away from home, is the over night bag. The name tells you the purpose is of this piece. They’re perfect for the gentleman heading over to his girlfriends house for the night. Similar to duffles they typically have one compartment. Packing your clothes for the next day, sleeping attire, and toiletries for a nights stay is easy with this bag.
Dopp kit. A Dopp kit is a complimentary bag. It’s a small toiletry bag that fits into any of the bags I mentioned above. It’s primary use is to store a mans grooming supplies while traveling. A Dopp kit prevents toiletry items from spilling on your clothes. The name is derived from Charles Doppelt, a leather craftsman from Germany who migrated to a the states and invented the bag.
Briefcase or messenger. Now obviously these bags aren’t for traveling, however they are for transporting your belongs to the office or to a meeting. They’re essential for your everyday work life. The briefcase is classic and timeless but the messenger is just as good. You can’t go Wrong with either selection.
Back pack. The backpack like the messenger or briefcase is a great for carry work related items. It’s more suitable for for non formal environments though.
These Bags are all you need to have a great luggage collection.
